What are the South Tyneside Parades?

The Cultural Spring has worked alongside South Tyneside Council to show the diverse and amazing talents of our community through the summer and winter parades. Through partnerships with artists, volunteers, and community groups, including WAVES, South Tyneside Youth Service and Autism Able, we have facilitated the creation of parade structures and floats that show the hard work, determination and collaboration within the community! Groups such as Groundworks and St Matthews have independently created parade structures with support from experienced creative artists, showing our commitment to community-led artistic expression.

Volunteers also play a key role in supporting these creations, through helping activities to take place and ensuring community members have a key role in the project. We offer parade art workshops that allow groups involved to create costumes and banners for the parade, each year more groups want to get involved which helps to further strengthen the community bonds and foster collective achievement, showing how South Tyneside can come together as a community!

To support our artists, we delivered talent development sessions in partnership with the national parade group Handmade Production. These sessions support local artists, college students and community groups by helping them to develop the skills to design parade structures for both summer and winter events. Through this we work to strengthen community connection and allow everyone involved to play a major role and develop many artistic skills, a few participants have subsequently created structures for parades beyond our region. We are committed to offering arts and culture to every community in South Tyneside and being a major contributor to these amazing parades!
